FUN Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

For over twenty years, the leprechaun would visit my classroom and then my home when I began to homeschool. My kids have made countless traps all in hopes to catch the leprechaun's pot of gold. They haven't caught him yet, but they don't seem to mind too much since he always leaves them a special treat behind, such as one of theseIf you need a laugh, you have to read my post- A Funny and VERY TRUE St. Patrick's Day Story I promise you this is for real- I could not make this stuff up folks!

Silly McGilly actually visits your house on St. Patrick's Day (or even a few days before) and he loves to play tricks on little ones, such as: hiding toys, turning things upside down, changing toilet water green, and leaving cabinet doors open (oh wait, that's my 20 year-old son!)

I plan to sit Silly McGilly by our window and then my younger kids can write letters to him and keep a scrapbook of the funny tricks he plays on them.

On March 17th, we like to begin our morning with reading the classic Dr. Seuss book, Green Eggs and Ham. Afterwardswe eat green eggs and ham. ☺

My favorite art project that my little ones have completed is the torn paper art project. It's also great for fine motor skills. CLICK HERE for the directions.

My three and four-year-olds are going to be using bingo markers to have some fun with these activities. CLICK HERE to print off some copies for your wee little ones to enjoy.

My former students and my own children have enjoyed graphing Lucky Charms for as long as I can remember. This is a classic activity every year. Tip: Before you open the box, ask your child which type he/she thinks will be the most popular type of marshmallow. This is a terrific way to practice making predictions, as well as practicing graphing skills. CLICK HERE to print off a copy.

For a fun science activity, we like to do a Color Changing Milk Experiment. CLICK HERE for instructions. Tip: It does not work with the foam dishwashing soap.

For writing, I like to use these creative writing prompts.

HERE are tons of free St. Patrick's Day printables, such as: games, mazes, handwriting, practicing math skills, art ideas and much more!

My kids will not let me forget to make this crockpot potato soup recipe, which has become a family tradition. CLICK HERE for the recipe.

Here is a video of my kids and I making the potato soup and Shamrock Shakes (also called Yoda Soda or Lucky Lime).

For a fun dessert, we make rainbow cookies. CLICK HERE to see how we do this.

Even though I like doing fun activities for this holiday, I read The Story of St. Patrick to my older children. With all the not-so-family-friendly ways that people in the U.S. celebrate St. Patrick's Day, I want my kids to understand why the holiday originated and how amazing this heroic person really was.

Did you know that Saint Patrick was known for his intense prayer life and that he used the three leaf-clover to explain the Trinity to others? We use this visual and sometimes even make our own trinity shamrocks. CLICK HERE to print off a copy.

My sweet blogging friend, Shannon, has found lots of online learning activities for St. Patrick's Day.

She linked them all to one easy-to-use website. So cool!

I'd like to leave you with this Irish blessing. ♥
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Wishing you a happy St. Patrick's Day!

Don't miss out on these recipes!

best potato soup recipe

A few years ago I wanted to make potato soup with my kids for St. Patrick's Day. I found a few great crockpot recipes and then tweaked them into one delicious recipe that I knew my family would enjoy. I thought we'd make it together to celebrate the holiday and then I'd file away the recipe to possibly use again on a future St. Patrick's Day.
But this is what happened.....

The potato soup was SOOOO incredibly tasty that my kids said they couldn't wait a year to eat it again. So I added it to our family recipe book, and it became one of our favorite meals that we make often. A few years ago, I wrote about the potato soup on this site in case others wanted to make it for an Irish treat with their kids, too.
Then along came Pinterest.....

Someone randomly pinned that recipe about a year ago and suddenly I had more people visiting my blog for this one recipe than any other of my posts. Sometimes thousands a day- for over a year! I find it quite comical that a recipe post attracts more readers than my 400+ teaching tips posts (esp. since this is not a cooking blog but a teaching tips blog). But hey, kids are reading recipes, following step-by-step directions, and practicing math skills (measurements and fractions) as well as learning the very important life skill of cooking so it's all good. :)
When Fox contacted me to film a St. Patrick's Day segment on the Mom Squad, I knew exactly what to share.
So here it is.....

St. Patrick's Day Activities that Kids LOVE

Did you know that Saint Patrick was known for his intense prayer life and that he used the three leaf-clover to explain the Trinity to others? Legend has it that St. Patrick would hold up a shamrock and challenge his listeners, "Is it one leaf or three?" He would continue, "And so it is with God. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are equally referred to as God."

To read more about the life of Saint Patrick- CLICK HERE

And then create a Trinity Shamrock from Guildcraft.  Click image to download.
This is so cool! Have your child stare at a red shamrock for 30 seconds. I make a small black dot in the center to help my kids focus in the middle of it. Then have your child look immediately at a blank white sheet of paper. A green shamrock will appear on the white paper! Since red is the complementary color of green, staring at something red will cause you to see a green image.
Shamrock Art- Cut a shamrock into sections, space the sections apart, and glue them on white or yellow construction paper. (This is tricky for younger children. They sometimes mix up the pieces.)
Play Hot Potato. In this classic game, the players sit around in a circle facing inwards and one is chosen as leader. The leader sits in the middle of the circle and closes his eyes. A small object, such as a potato or a ball, is passed around from player to player. Each player must accept the object and pass it very quickly. When the leader yells "HOT," the player holding the potato is out. The game is played over and over again until one player is left- the winner.

EASY CROCKPOT POTATO SOUP

potato soup

I originally wrote about this delicious recipe several years ago and have republished it a few times since then to share as a fun St. Patrick's Day recipe, but I never expected it to become such a popular post even though the recipe is out of this world. Below is a Mom Squad segment on Fox that I recently filmed on how to make the Best Crockpot Potato Soup Ever!

I like to make potato soup for my family on St. Patrick's Day, and I can't wait to share a recipe with you that I have used for the past few years. If you haven't read any of my other recipe posts, I have to let you know that I LOVE recipes that are easy and delicious and this one is both! Many people say it's better than Outback's potato soup and my family agrees. It's really mouth-watering so get ready to go shopping for the ingredients ASAP!

EASY CROCKPOT POTATO SOUP

1 30oz. bag of frozen, shredded hash browns
1 can of cream of chicken soup
48 oz. of chicken broth (use less for thicker soup)
Dash of pepper
1 pkg. cream cheese (add last hour of cooking)
optional- 2 c. shredded cheddar cheese, sauteed onions and mushrooms

Toppings:

sour cream
shredded cheddar cheese
green onions
bacon bits
chives
diced tomato
chili
broccoli
salsa
diced chicken
diced ham

In a crockpot, combine everything except for the cream cheese. Add any extra ingredients you may like in your soup, such as sauteed onions, mushrooms, and shredded cheddar cheese. My family likes our potato soup extra cheesy so I add it to the soup while cooking.

Cook for 6-8 hours on low to medium heat until most of the shredded potatoes are dissolved.  Some people prefer some shredded potatoes for extra texture but my family likes most of them dissolved to make the soup thicker. Add cream cheese about an hour before serving and keep heated until thoroughly melted.

Tips:

  • Avoid using fat-free and generic cream cheese when making soups because it tends to leave small clumps in the soup. Go with the name brands.
  • Even though this soup is great served with bread, especially French bread, my kids really like eating it with tortilla chips. They scoop it up with the chips, which makes it an even bigger hit with them!
  • You can cook this on your stove top for about 2 hours if you do not have time to use a crockpot. Just be careful not to burn the bottom of the soup.
  • My family treats our potato soup like a baked potato so we love to load it up with toppings. I actually set up a toppings bar and they can choose what they like. This is also a unique recipe to make for guests since people have fun adding their own toppings.
Enjoy!
